The commons will reject the municipal budget proposal of the executive of Mayor Jaume Collboni if ??the socialists do not agree to sign a government pact before the vote that will take place in the plenary session this Friday. In a vote carried out within the framework of the BComú plenary session, the bases of the formation supported this position in a very clear way, ratifying the strategy of their municipal group and redoubling their pressure on Mayor Collboni.

The spokesperson for the commons, Janet Sanz, already announced weeks ago that they were giving the PSC 30 days to agree to seal a progressive three-way government, also with ERC, and that if they did not do so they would knock down their budget proposal. But the municipal executive always responded to these pressures that Barcelona’s priority is to push the budgets forward, and that later they would talk about governability. The truth is that the possibility that BComú and PSC can do in a couple of days what they did not do in nine months now seems very complicated. Relationships between each other are more damaged than ever. Only a forceful turn by the common people at a given moment, fearful of being accused of generating the instability unleashed in the Generalitat in the City Council, could redirect the situation. But for now no one seems willing to give in. The communiqué of the commons was very harsh on the government work of the socialists. And PSC sources regretted that the commons prioritized their entry into the executive and rejected budgets that they were able to agree with the Republicans. Everything indicates that Mayor Collboni will have to submit to a question of trust to approve his accounts. The mayor always preferred that the matter take more conventional paths, but he never ruled out this route.

The question that BComú posed this Tuesday to its most prominent activists was this: “In the event that the PSC maintains its refusal to agree on a broad progressive government before the plenary session on the 22nd, do you support the decision to vote against the municipal budgets of 2024?” And the response was clear: 165 voted in favor of rejecting the budgets, five voted against and another five voted blank. The BComú bases usually ratify the decisions of their leaders. Any other decision would have been a big surprise. Sources from the party stressed that the call to activists had been known for a few days, but the truth is that the call took many by surprise. The socialists were not aware until shortly before it was held.
