A court has ordered the entry into prison of two men aged 30 and 35 accused of defrauding 182,000 euros through 50 telephone scams from catering establishments in Catalonia.

The alleged scammers posed as workers from an electricity company, claimed an alleged outstanding debt of 3,000 euros for non-payment and threatened establishments with cutting off their power, the Mossos d'Esquadra reported in a statement this Saturday.

The investigation began as a result of two complaints from establishments in Sitges (Barcelona) and the facts were related to various scams in other Catalan towns, in which they always repeated the same script in the calls.

According to the police force, one of the alleged perpetrators had accumulated 16 police records and had participated in similar scams between 2011 and 2014, events for which he had already served a prison sentence.

On May 10, the Mossos made an entry and search at the homes of those investigated, in Barcelona and Badalona (Barcelona), and arrested the alleged perpetrators; the agents recovered the electronic systems of the criminal activity and more than 14,000 euros.
