Trial of the man who tried to beat his 7-month-pregnant partner to abort

Jealous, controlling and very violent. That is, broadly speaking, the profile of the abuser that the Criminal Court number 8 of Zaragoza sat yesterday Monday in the defendant's dock after being denounced by her ex-partner for trying to force her to abort with fists when she was pregnant. The defendant, who did not want to make statements during the process, faces a sentence of up to 3 years in prison.

The events denounced took place on January 30. That day, in the middle of the night, a 32-year-old girl who was then in her seventh month of pregnancy took advantage of her partner's carelessness to flee and run to the Zaragoza Clinical Hospital to ask for help.

The victim then explained that Mohamed F., a 35-year-old man of Algerian origin with a criminal record, had recently become very jealous, controlling his mobile phone and doubting that he was the father of the child she was expecting.

The initial insults and threats – “that son is not mine and I am going to give you pills until he dies”, he told him on one occasion – was followed by physical aggression when he returned by car to Zaragoza after spending the day at the home of a relative in La Muela. Inside the vehicle, the man began to punch her numerous times in the gut, blows that the woman dodged as best she could by writhing in the passenger seat, and even brandished a knife at her in a threatening manner.

Later, after seeking refuge in the hospital and speaking with the agents, the attacker was arrested and brought to justice for crimes of gender violence, threats and coercion. Although at that time he refused to explain what had happened, the judge on duty ordered his release.

The National Police considered that the victim was in a high-risk situation, so they sought accommodation for her in a safe place and her ex-partner was prohibited from approaching or communicating with her. Meanwhile, the judge ordered that a GPS tracking device be placed on the suspect whose alarm went off eight days later.

During the process that began yesterday, the defendant maintained the same attitude as on the day of the arrest and accepted his right not to testify. He did not even answer the questions from her lawyer, who took advantage of the final report to question the complainant's version and request the acquittal of her client.

For her part, despite the fact that she is about to get out of account, the complainant did not hesitate to go to court yesterday to report her ordeal with a “very jealous” man who had her “absolutely controlled”.

That dangerous character was revealed again this Saturday, when Mohamed was arrested again after leading a reckless escape from the police that ended after ramming two vehicles stopped at a traffic light. As a result of the collision, the driver of one of the cars ended up in the hospital.
