The Civil Guard has destroyed a mortar shell from the Civil War found during excavations at the archaeological site of the castle in the town of Cervera del Maestre (Castellón).

The artifact was found on October 9 when an excavating machine intended to drill part of the site and came across the suspicious object, so the technical personnel in charge of the excavations notified the Civil Guard.

The GEDEX team of the Civil Guard of Valencia traveled to the site of the discovery and verified that it was a mortar grenade, an 81-millimeter caliber "Valero" model from the Civil War, which was completely buried in the ground.

The agents secured the area and proceeded to its controlled destruction on site, as reported this Saturday by Benemérita sources.

Despite the time that has passed and even though they look harmless, these types of devices can keep their explosive properties intact and any improper manipulation can activate their charge, which is why the Civil Guard asks not to manipulate them or move them from place to place and to notify the phone as soon as possible. 062.
