The latest advance in hair transplantation avoids the total shaving of the head

In a hair transplant, follicular units are implanted in the areas affected by baldness or lack of density, which have previously been extracted from the patient's own donor area (nape and sides). It is what is called an autologous transplant. And for this it is necessary that the donor area be shaved. "Having to shave is a problem for many patients who wish to have a hair transplant and, in fact, it is a question that is frequently asked when they come to the clinic for the first time," explains Montse Bonastre, Trichologist at the Vila Hair Institute. -Rovira, a clinic run by Dr. Ramón Vila-Rovira, a pioneer in hair transplantation in Spain. But the evolution of the technique today is of a high degree of sophistication at the surgical level and, in addition to completely aesthetic results for the patient.

At present, the demands in our family, social, and work life are a very important part of deciding when to perform a transplant without this changing our commitments.

The solution to this question lies in the innovative and painless FUE (Follicular Extraction Unit) technique of hair transplantation with partial shaving. In this case, "we only need to shave the donor area and this allows us the aesthetic recovery of the patient in a few days," they say from Vila-Rovira. Whether the patient is suitable for this type of surgery is an aspect that the specialist should assess, after the pertinent examinations and tests.

In the cases that it is possible, with this partial shaving technique the receiving area is not affected. Depending on the hairstyle, the patient's own hair can even hide the shaved area, thus fully preserving their privacy. As the days go by, the haircut will even out and the image change will not be as radical as that which a complete shave would entail.

Although it is not so well known to many, hair grafting is also possible in eyebrows and beards. In fact, it comes to solve many image problems in people who, for different reasons, have lost hair in those areas.

The donor area is also still the posterior area of the head. "Hair is obtained only by cutting small strips of hair to extract the follicular units, which are grafted one by one on the eyebrows or on the beard," explains Dr. Begoña Barros, a hair surgeon at the Vila-Rovira Institute.

Both in the case of eyebrows and beards, a prior study of the desired result is always made. We can redefine, increase the density... we make an absolutely personalized design, adapted to the physiognomy of the patient and always after a conversation about his expectations. But the result is very natural in all cases”, point out from the team of specialists of Dr. Vila-Rovira.

Whether on the head, beard or eyebrows, hair transplantation is a surgery that is performed in the operating room and, in the case of the Vila-Rovira Hair Institute, with a surgeon who is always present from start to finish. The intervention can be performed with local anesthesia, although sedation is recommended for long transplants for the safety and comfort of the patient. Hospital admission is not required, it is an outpatient procedure.

The transplanted hair begins to grow three or four months after the intervention. It is natural, aesthetic, and has the same characteristics that it had in its previous location, because let's remember that these are autotransplants in which the hair is simply moved from one location to another. The image change is more evident after six years of surgery, and it is considered to be definitive when one year has passed since the intervention.
