A 30-year-old man was sentenced Monday to one year and seven months in prison for crashing into two sheriff's cars in unincorporated Clackamas County last month.
Jeremy Grina pleaded guilty in Clackamas County Circuit Court to assault of a public safety officer and was ordered to pay a little more than $13,000 in restitution. He will serve two years of post-prison supervision after his release.
Additional charges of attempting to elude a police officer, failure to perform the duties of a driver, first-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, reckless endangering and second-degree theft were dropped as part of a plea agreement.
According to authorities, Grina fled when Deputy Erik McGlothin tried to pull over a Volkswagen Jetta he was driving near Southeast 82nd and Causey avenues on Jan. 26. The deputy was investigating a reported theft at a Lowe's in Milwaukie where a trio of suspects were spotted leaving in a Jetta.
Grina, who had two passengers, drove to a Wal-Mart parking lot in the area then crashed into McGlothin's SUV. The deputy wasn't seriously hurt. Grimm, the police dog McGlothin was traveling with, was uninjured.
Grina continued driving. He hit a semi-truck while still in the parking lot and later rammed Sgt. Lynn Schoenfeld's patrol car head-on, the sheriff's office said. The driver and his passengers, Benjamin Esterberg and Andres Duarte, then ran from the Jetta, the sheriff's office said.
Grimm and other deputies later tracked the trio down and arrested them. Schoenfeld wasn't seriously injured.
Esterberg, 26, still faces a second-degree theft charge in the case. Duarte, 34, was initially accused of the same charge, but it has since been dismissed.
