Spain has to promote mid-level vocational training to match the European average

Intermediate vocational training continues to be a pending subject in Spain, where we are still far from European levels of training in this type of qualifications, while in the case of higher training in many cases there is an excess of people in the market labor.

Specifically, Spain is 21% below the European average in people with intermediate-level qualifications, making it clear that vocational training has to match the euro zone in this sense given the demand of many companies in our country, which, however, do that can count on a wide range of higher education graduates.

According to the latest CaixaBank Dualiza report, a series of actions are required in Spain to achieve the vocational training levels demanded by companies in the labor market, starting with increasing the volume of graduates (especially in the intermediate degree of vocational training).

Specifically, the study indicates that we must continue to increase the attraction of young people in this sense, with a greater impact on women and that they be more present in STEM professional families, especially in those with high demand, such as IT and Communications.

To fill these mid-level positions that companies are demanding, it is essential to “increase accessibility and support for young people to enter vocational training with scholarships, public places, etc.,” highlights the CaixaBank report.

For this reason, we must "attract young people to training cycles with easy job insertion in their environment and that allows them quality professional development" as well as "increase qualifications, minimizing abandonment at any level of vocational training and ensuring that "Basic FP is consolidated as an effective bridge to the intermediate level."

Furthermore, the research highlights that it is necessary to “diagnose the reasons for under- and over-qualification in sectoral and/or business jobs to address their readjustment” in the future.

To achieve this, we must “promote specialization courses that help to further specialization in the intermediate level” and “promote the gateways between the different training modalities: Higher Degree FP towards University (and vice versa), Intermediate Degree FP towards Degree FP Higher, and Basic FP towards Intermediate FP”.

The intermediate degree cycles are magnificent training given their high demand in the labor market and which allow for greater specialization later if the student wants it.
