One of 12 children rescued from a cave in Thailand dies in 2018

Duangphet Phromthep, one of the twelve children who was rescued in 2018 after being trapped in a cave in Thailand for more than two weeks with the rest of his soccer teammates, died this Wednesday in the United Kingdom.

The 25-year-old was found unconscious in his room on Sunday and taken to a hospital, where he died on Tuesday, according to sources close to the matter to the British television channel BBC.

Phromthep had enrolled in 2022 at a soccer academy in the United Kingdom thanks to a scholarship obtained in August. The young man, known as Dom, was the captain of the soccer team that was trapped in the cave due to heavy rain while on an excursion in the Thai province of Chiang Rai.

The twelve minors and their soccer coach were trapped in the Tham Luang cave on June 23, 2018, when they were surprised by the intense rainfall that flooded part of the tunnels of the complex.

After an intensive search, British divers located them hungry and in the dark in an unflooded area of a room several kilometers into the cave complex.

The rescue of all of them was carried out by diving after giving them ketamine to keep them anesthetized and facilitate the work of the divers since none of those trapped had diving notions.

This enabled their extraction and prevented them from suffering from panic attacks during repeated dives into the turbulent, murky waters, as well as preventing them from suffering from hypothermia. To escape, the minors were taken one by one through a labyrinth of caves with rough and unknown waters.
