NEW BRUNSWICK -- A city man has admitted to opening fire on a group of men in New Brunswick in 2014, inadvertently killing a man sitting on a front stoop, court records show.
Rolando Martinez Sanchez, 25, pleaded guilty in Middlesex County Superior Court on Friday in front of Judge Dennis Nieves to a lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter as part of a plea deal, according to records.
Sanchez opened fire on a group of men on Hale Street in the early morning of May 18, 2014, and struck Gregorio Hernandez, 28, as well as another man, sitting outside. The two men were not the intended targets.
Hernandez was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly later. The 23-year-old man also shot was treated and released.
Sanchez and two other New Brunswick residents were indicted in 2015 on charges of murder, aggravated manslaughter, manslaughter, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.
Sanchez and Manual Mendez were also charged with hindering their apprehension, witness tampering and obstruction of the administration of law.
The status of the charges against Mendez and Renee Herrera were unknown.
Sanchez's sentencing is scheduled for March 17, where he faces 30 years in prison.
