MORRISTOWN -- A Sussex County man pleaded guilty Monday to speeding and racing another vehicle on Route 23 in Butler this past July before he crashed and seriously injured his 20-year-old passenger, the Daily Record reported.

The passenger -- Christopher Boes of West Milford-- died more than a week after the crash.

Police said at the time three men were ejected in the July 29 crash near the Route 23 Automall in Butler -- the driver, Timothy Runo, 20, of Vernon; passenger Shane Lepore, 20, of West Milford; and Boes.

Boes was airlifted to the hospital due to the extent of his injuries and died on Aug. 9.

According to the Daily Record, Timothy Runo, who has no memory of the crash, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault-by-auto in connection with the crash.

Runo is expected to be sentenced on May 5, the newspaper reported. The Morris County Prosecutor's Office has recommended Runo be sentenced to 270 days in the county jail, probation and community service.
