Man dies a week after being stabbed by girlfriend in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A 40-year-old man died Sunday, one week after he was stabbed in the chest during a fight with his girlfriend, officials said.

Aaron Becton of Cleveland died at University Hospitals, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.

His girlfriend, Yvonne Davis, 37, is charged with felonious assault. Her case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury, which could add more serious charges following Becton's death.

The stabbing happened about 10 p.m. on Feb. 19 at Davis' home in the 11200 block of Mount Overlook, west of East 116th Street in the city's Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood.

Becton and Davis gave police different accounts of what led to the stabbing, according to police reports.

Becton said Davis invited him over for dinner and drinks. He said an argument broke out in the kitchen while the two drank wine, according to police reports.

Becton told police he yelled at Davis, who grabbed a knife and stabbed him twice, according to police reports. Becton said he wrestled the knife away from her, looked down and saw his white shirt turning red from blood, police reports say.

Davis' 8-year-old twins came downstairs after the stabbing and were told to go back upstairs, police reports say.

An ambulance took Becton to the hospital with stab wounds to his left chest and left shoulder, police reports say.

Police arrived and found Davis had washed off blood in her kitchen with bleach, according to police. She told police she did so in order to keep her kids from seeing the blood.

Davis told police Becton came to her home "very drunk," according to police reports. She said she grabbed the knife when Becton choked her and stabbed him until he let her go, police reports say.

Officers noted they did not see any marks on Davis' neck that would indicate that someone choked her, according to police reports. Police also said Becton's blood was smeared on Davis' clothes.

An aunt took custody of Davis' three children, including a 17-year-old boy who was also home at the time of the stabbing, according to police.
