"Specialists recommend having periodic checkups starting at age forty-five to avoid prostate problems.

Specialists highlight minimally invasive laser surgery for the treatment of this pathology

Valencian Community September 14, 2023. The specialists from Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Valencia warn on the European Prostate Health Day that more than half of men manifest symptoms related to benign prostate hyperplasia after the age of fifty.

“These symptoms,” highlights Dr. Amparo Miguez, urologist at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, “usually present progressively, and include problems when urinating such as urgency and incontinence, which causes the repetitive need to go to the bathroom for the nights. “Some men also suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections and bleeding during urination associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.”

The disproportionate enlargement of the prostate gland is what is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, and it can occur for different reasons. “The most common are genetic and racial factors, aging, certain lifestyles or hormonal and dietary factors,” highlights Dr. Míguez.

The urologist at the Quirónsalud Valencia Hospital, Javier Pérez-Ardavin, recommends regular prostate checkups starting at the age of forty-five to avoid pathologies such as benign prostate hyperplasia. “This is diagnosed with tests such as the patient's medical history, general examination, urinalysis and urine culture, blood analysis with PSA and other complementary diagnostic tests such as flowmetry, and ultrasound of the urinary system,” details the Quirónsalud Valencia specialist.

Dr. Míguez describes the Holmio laser as “endoscopic surgery that is performed through the patient's urethra, allowing the complete removal and elimination of the transition zone, which is the innermost part of the prostate.”

The Quirónsalud Torrevieja specialist points out that this technique is the most suitable for large prostates. “Complete elimination is the main advantage of the Holmium laser since, with other types of interventions, it is possible to leave residual tissue that can grow over the years and produce a new obstruction,” she details.

The green laser is another of the cutting-edge techniques that Dr. Javier Pérez from Quirónalud Valencia highlights for the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia.

"In this case," explains Dr. Pérez-Ardavin, "the endoscopic treatment is carried out through the urethra, without incisions, and consists of the selective application of laser energy that vaporizes the prostate tissue quickly and effectively, achieving a decrease in prostatic obstruction and lower urinary tract symptoms.

Like the Holmium laser technique, the green laser intervention is also quick, minimally invasive and painless, and the operation also does not affect erections or continence.

“The green laser is the most recommended treatment in patients with poor tolerance to pharmacological treatment or when, despite this, a more effective treatment is recommended, and for older men who suffer from other pathologies (diabetes, heart disease, etc.), especially if they receive anticoagulant and antiplatelet treatments, especially due to the lower risk of bleeding that this technique offers,” concludes Dr. Javier Pérez-Ardavin.

Effective treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

The specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Valencia highlight minimally invasive treatments such as the Green laser and the Holmium laser as the two most effective treatments for benign prostate hyperplasia.

Dr. Míguez describes the Holmio laser as “endoscopic surgery that is performed through the patient's urethra, allowing the complete removal and elimination of the transition zone, which is the innermost part of the prostate.”
