One driver was killed Saturday morning when two vehicles collided on U.S. 101 about 12 miles south of Coos Bay.

Oregon State Police responded at about 8:40 a.m. to the crash scene near milepost 249.

A blue-gray 2010 Ford Taurus was northbound on the highway when the driver saw an oncoming southbound white 2004 Nissan Xterra begin to fishtail and leave its lane. The vehicles collided in the northbound lane and the Nissan Xterra caught on fire.

The Nissan Xterra driver died. The driver's identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Both Taurus occupants were taken to the Coos Bay area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
