Ciarán forces to cancel and divert flights and suspend traffic on several railway lines

The Ciarán storm, which has affected the northwest of the peninsula since Wednesday, has kept railway traffic interrupted in a large part of Galicia, where there have also been flight cancellations and diversions at the three Galician airports.

One of the most notable last-minute changes of destination due to the storm took place last night. As reported by a passenger in La Voz de Galicia – whose name she prefers to keep anonymous – she was diverted 800 kilometers away: she had to land in Santiago de Compostela and, after trying to land on two occasions, she ended up landing in Seville.

"The pilot tried to land on two occasions at the Rosalía de Castro airport, but it was impossible. We were then told that we could not land in either Porto or Madrid and that they were going to take us to Seville!", says the passenger. .

Travelers on Ryanair flight FR2001, traveling from Lanzarote to the Galician capital, were not offered any viable solution. "A quick option that was offered was a flight that would leave around 9:00 p.m. to Santiago, and which, I believe, was finally diverted to Porto. There were only twelve seats that, logically, were for families with children," he points out. "The other possibility was ten seats on a flight that leaves this Thursday at 11:00 from Seville to Santiago. The rest, that is, more than 160 people, were told to make a living and then file a claim," he denounces.

Ciarán's entry led to the diversion of seven flights at Galician airports and the cancellation of another in Santiago. The inability of these planes to land in Rosalía de Castro-Lavacolla led to the suspension of the four flights early this Thursday and delays in the takeoff of three others.

In Vigo and A Coruña, two flights were cancelled, both from Madrid, which were scheduled to land on Wednesday afternoon at the Peinador and Alvedro terminals.

Aena sources consulted by Europa Press have reported that the weather situation at the Galician airports has improved on Thursday morning, in which there has only been one diversion from A Coruña and Santiago.

However, the situation is not yet normalized because the diversions and cancellations on Wednesday evening have prevented the connections of those flights from being ready for takeoff this Thursday morning.

As for rail traffic, only the Atlantic axis and the connection between Santiago and Ourense – which, in turn, links with the AVE to Madrid – escapes the restrictions agreed upon by Renfe as a result of the storm.

Thus, traffic between Ourense and Vigo, between A Coruña and Ferrol and between the Herculean city and Monforte remains interrupted. In all of these, the railway operator has enabled an alternative road transport service. In addition, the storm has also forced the cutting of Cercanías and Media Distancia Metric Gauge services between Ferrol and Oviedo.
