Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan to deliver State of the City address

AKRON, Ohio - At a sold-out luncheon, Mayor Dan Horrigan will deliver his 2017 State of the City address on Tuesday at the John S. Knight Center.

At the event, hosted by the Akron Roundtable, Horrigan will highlight accomplishments of his first year in office and discuss his vision, as well as  current and future initiatives.

As Akron's 62nd mayor, Horrigan has pledged to focus on the income, health and education of Akron residents. He also has committed to implementing innovative, fiscally responsible initiatives that heighten the efficiency and transparency of city operations.

Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and University of Akron President Matthew Wilson will also speak.

Reporter Jennifer Conn will cover the speech live on Twitter, which you can follow below.

Horrigan was Akron's first newly elected mayor in 28 years, after Don Plusquellic, who had served since 1987, abruptly announced his resignation in 2015.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the Russell M. Pry Memorial Scholarship at the University of Akron School of Law, formed in honor of Horrigan's late friend and mentor, Summit County Executive Russ Pry.

Mark Scheffler, executive director of Leadership Akron will serve as master of ceremonies, and Donzell Taylor, chair of the Greater Akron Chamber, will introduce the mayor.

Partners for the event include the Akron Roundtable, the Greater Akron Chamber, Leadership Akron, the Rotary Club of Akron, Akron Kiwanis, and Pritt Entertainment Group.

Doors open at 11 a.m., lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the mayor's address will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. A Q & A session will follow.

The John S. Knight Center is located at 77 E. Mill St. in Akron. For more information, contact Akron Roundtable 330-247-8682.
