A man has died this Saturday afternoon in Platja d'Aro (Baix Empordà) while practicing spearfishing by freediving, about 2 miles from the coast of Port d'Aro and at a depth of 36 meters, reported the Bombers de the Generalitat in a statement.
The body has been rescued by the Firefighters in collaboration with and under the command of the Special Group for Underwater Activities (Geas) of the Civil Guard.
He was sailing in a small boat with a friend, with whom he alternated to freedive at Roca Alta. Since he did not emerge after a while, the colleague jumped into the sea and gave the alarm to the maritime emergency service, which in turn gave the alert to 112.
According to the Fire Department, at 4:24 p.m. the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center of Barcelona alerted the 112 emergency number of the disappearance of a person during a sport fishing dive.
The Civil Guard divers have come to the place and have led the rescue operation, together with the Firefighters, which has allowed access to the body and proceed to its immediate extraction, given the bad weather that was already in the area. Once the body was extracted from the water, a Maritime Rescue boat has transported it to the mainland.
The Civil Guard has taken over the investigation of the accident and the corresponding legal proceedings.
