12 Cuyahoga County cities awarded development grants

CLEVELAND - Twelve cities will receive development grants totaling $1.65 million, Cuyahoga County officials announced Friday.

The grants must be approved by Cuyahoga County Council.

"During a time of declining revenues for our communities, the Community Development Block Grant program provides needed capital for community reinvestment allowing us to work together to sustain and develop vibrant communities," Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish said in a statement.

The Municipal Grant Program is a competitive grant program that makes awards up to $150,000 for projects that will strengthen cities and improve the quality of life for residents.

The Competitive Storefront Renovation Program provides grant funding of up to $50,000 for revitalization of commercial, historic or town center areas with awards up to $50,000.

Fifty-one of the county's 58 communities were eligible to apply for both programs, which are funded by federal Community Development Block Grant funds.

Awardees must meet certain requirements set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants.

The county's Department of Development manages the program and evaluates applications.

This year's awarded projects include construction on streets, sewer repair, sidewalk repair, ADA improvements, community center Safirbet enhancements, playground improvements and storefront renovation, the county said.

The recommended awards will be presented to County Council on Feb. 28. The storefront awards will be presented to the Cuyahoga County Board of Control.
