Why it is important that children and adolescents learn to entertain themselves

"Mom, dad, I'm bored" is one of those phrases that children and adolescents often dedicate to their parents. And, for psychologists, it represents something very positive. Not so for the parents of the creatures. Plans, toys, ideas or educational recommendations or just based on pure entertainment. Parents worry about keeping children entertained at home, although some are more or less demanding than others in terms of the method and not only the result. Nobody wants their child to be bored, but this is by no means a bad thing.

Although feeling bored is often seen as a very negative thing and to be avoided at all costs, especially in today's society marked by high pressures around continuous productivity, the reality is that it is a useful feeling. This is mainly because boredom is an excellent way for children and adolescents to immerse themselves in a process of self-discovery.

Boredom is not a waste of time or something negative, it is an opportunity. The psychologist Dona Matthews explains that it is important that children and adolescents go through this process, that is, that they get bored. Because, in this way, they will be able to discover what their interests and concerns are, as well as explore their different skills and abilities. Especially it consists of a basic way to promote and stimulate creativity, since the minor will have to find formulas to end that boredom.
