What is canicross and what are its benefits for your dog

Running is one of the most popular and practiced sports. An infallible exercise to keep you physically fit and to clear your mind. Anyone can practice it and you don't need too specific sports equipment or pay a gym fee.

Going for a run is for many a hobby, a lifestyle, beyond training. For this reason, more and more people want to play sports in the company of their best friend: their dog. This discipline is known as canicross and has many advantages for both the animal and the human.

Canicross basically consists of going for a run with your dog. There are those who practice it as a hobby and others even in competitions with other pairs of runners and dogs.

In this discipline, the person is tied –generally around the waist– a leash or rope that in turn is attached to the dog's harness. So the only necessary materials are comfortable shoes for the human, a specific leash and a harness for the dog. For canicross, a harness is better than a collar, as this is more comfortable and safer, avoiding pulling or possible injuries to the animal's neck.

Any dog can practice canicross, as long as it is in good shape. Although as a general rule it is more common in large dogs and more athletic breeds. Small dogs or those with flat snouts don't hold up so well to the pace. Likewise, this practice is not recommended for puppies, whose muscle and bone development is not yet complete.

It is important to note that we must train first and start little by little, as well as always respect our pet's times. To train the animal, organize small running sessions, get him in shape by getting him used to longer walks, as well as play sessions that involve running, for example, chasing a ball.

When you think he's ready to start canicross, do it progressively too. Always with slow and short runs, rewarding their good behavior through positive reinforcement. As you see his stamina improve, you will be able to increase distance and speed. In addition, for the canicross to be positive, both of you must be running at the same height. It is not recommended that the dog go behind you or ahead dragging you.

On the other hand, make sure that the races are on safe and soft terrain, so that your dog does not hurt itself on the pads. It is also important to run at times when it is not too hot, as well as always carry water for your furry companion. You must be very aware of his needs and stop when you see him tired.
