The Torre del Veguer winery, located in Sant Pere de Ribes, in the Penedès wine region in Barcelona, stands out as one of the most unique wineries in the world. Respecting the medieval structure and the renovation carried out in the 19th century, Torre del Veguer has incorporated modern facilities since 1995, following market trends and betting on innovation.
This new stage of the winery focuses on the production of quality wines from native varieties of the Garraf region, such as Xarel·lo and Malvasía, as well as Mediterranean varieties such as Moscatel and Garnacha, and other varieties of internationally renowned such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Syrah.
The Torre del Veguer vineyards have been 100% organic since 2016 and surround the winery, with the Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop. This privileged location gives the wines unique characteristics, such as mineral, saline and iodized notes that reflect the influence of the sea.
The winery is located in a historical-artistic building cataloged by the Generalitat of Catalonia. Built on an old medieval "strong house", it preserves architectural elements from different periods.
On the outside, a large portal stands out with a marble shield from the 16th century that shows the weapons of the Avinyó. Inside, you can see pointed arches in the cellar and a semicircular arch in the kitchen, testimonies of the building's antiquity.
The history of Torre del Veguer is closely linked to the Garraf region. More than 2,000 years ago, the Iberians were already cultivating vineyards in this area, and the Romans continued this tradition.
The Garraf limestone massif, with its poor soils and Mediterranean climate, provides ideal conditions for the cultivation of life and the production of wines of unique character. Native varieties such as Malvasía de Sitges and Xarel·lo are the protagonists in this region, along with other varieties such as Garnacha, Cariñena, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Abelerol Muscat, one of its highlights
One of its most notable wines is Abellerol Muscat, a white wine made 100% with the Muscat de Frontignan grape variety.
The vineyard is in a privileged location, between the Mediterranean Sea and Pic del Montgrós, at the eastern end of the Garraf Natural Park.
The terroir is characterized by limestone soils formed by Quaternary alluvium, deep and with low organic matter content. The mild Mediterranean climate, with a great marine influence and around 4,800 hours of sunshine per year, gives the wine its unique character.
Regarding the sensory characteristics of Abellerol 2021, it has a bright pale yellow color. On the nose, intense notes of almond blossom are perceived that combine with fruity aromas of orange and peach. An expectorant and menthol balsamic part is also appreciated. In the mouth, you experience a sweet and balanced entry, evoking the aromas perceived on the nose. The finish is long and pleasant.
This wine is especially recommended to accompany appetizers, tapas and light starters. In addition, it pairs very well with white fish and Asian cuisine, and is also suitable for lightly cured cow and goat cheeses.
