Tips for traveling by plane with a small child

There is little left for Easter and, with it, some perfect holidays for a family getaway. Or maybe you are already planning your trip for the summer holidays. In this sense, the equation for combining children and airplanes is overwhelming.

But the truth is that flying with your children can be a simple and positive experience if you plan it correctly. There is no reason to give up air travel for fear that they will misbehave or throw a tantrum. Following a series of tips, the journey will take place without incident for you and your little ones. Patience will be your best ally on the journey.

Children need very marked routines to feel good. Keep this in mind when booking the flight time, especially if it is a long journey. Depending on the character of your little one, you will know if a night flight that can spend sleeping is more convenient, or a daytime flight where you can entertain yourself with the adventure.

Do not forget to take into account the time difference with your destination, if any, so as not to greatly alter your circadian rhythms. A good trick is to keep him active and entertained before the flight, so that he falls asleep during the trip.

In case your children are old enough to understand you, talk to them about what it means to travel by plane. Explain to them each detail in an understanding way and approach it in such a way that it excites them. You can even play at home, recreating the scene of a flight, so that they get used to the idea. This way, they'll be less nervous when it's time to fly.

Find out about the possibility of taking with you on board water, food –or breast milk or formula– and some medicines that your child may need. Many times, hunger or a stomach ache trigger inconsolable crying, so you should anticipate these situations. And don't forget the pacifier if your baby uses it.

Before boarding, sitting waiting to take off, or at times when your child gets nervous, try to propose relaxation exercises. Conscious breathing, looking out the window, giving him some massages or caresses...

Apart from relaxation, distraction and entertainment will be essential. Take several toys with you to alternate as he gets bored: his favorite stuffed animal, dolls, stories, coloring books and paints, etc. It's also a good idea to put music or a pre-downloaded movie on a device in case there are no screens in the seats.

Try to make your child as comfortable as possible on the plane. For this, he takes a cushion and a blanket. It is also important that you have spare clothes in your carry-on suitcase in case they get dirty or wet, as well as warm clothes to counteract the air conditioning.
