The street origin of the Pixie Bob, the most popular cat breed in the United States

There is a wide variety of cat breeds, each one more peculiar and curious, as would be the case of the Egyptian cat or sphinx, those that lack hair. But if we're talking about the most popular kitten in the United States, that would undoubtedly be the Pixie Bob.

His nice name and his affable character have nothing to do with his aggressive appearance. They are large cats, between 28 and 30 centimeters, which can weigh up to 5 kilos. Its complexion is robust, with an aggressive appearance and furious look, very muscular and with a short and thick tail. They have anatomy and fur very similar to that of a lynx (with a thick, mottled coat and pointy, fluffy ears) and their origin story piques the curiosity of feline lovers.

The origin of the Pixie Bob cat dates back to the United States in the 1980s. Specifically, in a mountainous area near Washington. A woman named Carol Ann Brewer found a stray cat named Pixie on the street, with an appearance that was attributed to a cross between a bobcat and a domestic cat. Brewer decided to adopt the kitty and bring him home.

This exotic cat was mated with Carol Ann Brewer's domestic cat and from their crossbreed was born a female cat with reddish and mottled fur like Pixie's, but with the loyal, docile and affable character of her mother, named Blackfoot. Then, Brewer became fascinated by the crossbreed and began to selectively cross specimens to breed this breed that she named Pixie Bob.

The breed spread rapidly throughout the United States and was officially recognized in the 1990s by various feline associations. This cemented the popularity of the breed, allowing them to compete in shows, shows, and competitions. Although the Pixie Bob arrived in Europe in 2001, its popularity is not as widespread as in the United States.

Although they have the appearance and look of aggressive lynxes, the truth is that their personality is characterized by docility, they are sociable, friendly and very playful. Perfect for families with children and also for people who spend little time at home, as they are independent like the good cats they are. In addition, they are energetic and playful, they love physical exercise and spending time outdoors.

The most notable characteristic of Pixie Bob cats is their polydactyly, that is, they have more fingers than other breeds, a characteristic present in very few breeds of kittens. Although not all Pixie Bob specimens comply with this aspect, the vast majority have up to seven fingers, which can be the same or different sizes compared to the rest of their fingers and be functional or lack mobility.
