The 3 super torrijas that most resemble the homemade recipe, according to the OCU

If there is an indisputable classic of Lent and Easter, it is French toast. Such is the success of this sweet that in addition to being prepared in restaurants and bakeries, it is available in supermarkets. These versions will never surpass the homemade ones, but if we know how to choose the highest quality ones, they can be a quick and easy way to enjoy this traditional recipe at any time.

In order to save us work, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has just launched a ranking with the best super torrijas, for which it has taken into account aspects such as nutritional quality or flavor.

The experts have selected six brands that make this traditional sweet: Ahorramás, Alcampo, Carrefour, Casa Ecizal, El Corte Inglés and Mercadona. Later they have reviewed the labeling to study the nutritional data, the list of ingredients or the conservation of the product.

They have also analyzed some of the nutrients in the product, such as energy content, carbohydrates, proteins, salt and fiber, as well as the presence of saturated fats or sugars and sweeteners.

Finally, explains the OCU, "the French toast has been submitted to a panel of 3 pastry experts, who have tasted and valued it based on its resemblance (or not) to the traditional recipe." In this phase of the study, characteristics such as appearance, color, smell, taste, juiciness and balance of aromas were taken into account. "While some products have been highly appreciated, others have not been liked by expert tasters, finding them dry, with little flavor or strange smells," they point out.

Only three brands pass the test and, according to the organization, they resemble the traditional recipe. The Mercadona one obtains the highest score "for a good balance between flavors and aromas and adequate juiciness". It is followed by the Casa Eceiza French toast, "very juicy and with a pleasant hint of caramel, although it does not look like a classic French toast, and it is the most expensive".

The third position is for the Carrefour proposal, which according to the OCU also "stands out for its juiciness and has less sugar. It is the most economical," they point out. Check the prices here:

In spite of everything, the OCU recommends that in order to fully enjoy French toast, we prepare them at home, both for the taste and for the price. You can follow this recipe:
