The Latin Grammy Awards, the most valued and anticipated by the Latin American community, left their mark in Seville this past Thursday. The Andalusian capital became the first city in 24 years of history to hold the event outside the United States, filling the Fibes Conference and Exhibition Center with the most renowned artists on the current scene. The ceremony, even so, started with a significant moment on Rosalía's part.
The Catalan singer was in charge of opening proceedings with a heartfelt interpretation of Se nos fue el amor, one of the musical themes par excellence of Rocío Jurado's repertoire. The performance brought the venue to its feet and accumulated hundreds of thousands of views on platforms such as YouTube or Instagram. However, not everyone considers that Rosalía has lived up to the task. This is what Salvador Mohedano, Rocío's nephew, has made known.
Chayo Mohedano's brother left his critical response in a message on X (Twitter) from Juan Carlos Monedero, one of the founding members of Podemos, who congratulated the artist on her performance: “I think Rosalía is spectacular. She doesn't want to compete. When she sings this song she knows it is a tribute. Because you have to accumulate a lot of pain to sing like that. And it is very likely that Rosalía will become as great as Rocío Jurado. And in some ways, she already is. And she makes way.”
Not content with these words, Mohedano was clear and concise: “Now to look like my aunt she only needs one thing… her voice!” His criticism left a multitude of reactions and responses about it. “Your aunt set the bar so high that it will be many years before a similar voice appears. But I am moved when they pay tributes full of beauty and respect,” expressed one user. Even so, Jurado's nephew wanted to qualify her words in responses to other messages.
“Yes, I believe that. I like to see that they remember her, but a lot of staging and very little voice! The songs that are covered must be defended a little better,” she indicated. “It is appreciated that you remember her, I really do, but yesterday was not to honor my aunt. They were just hints to the ex, nothing more. If she sings louder and better, I didn't see it yesterday. But it is also true that I don't listen to her so you will know better than me,” she insisted.
Beyond this complaint, Rosalía herself thanked her team and Rocío Jurado herself for yesterday's performance, Thursday: “Yesterday I sang in Seville surrounded by the best musicians and excited. Thanks to Rocío for being an inspiration from day 1 and to Manuel Alejandro for this wonderful composition, and Jesús Bola for arranging it like this. Thank you Latin Grammys for the opportunity! I leave wanting to stay, but Seville I know I will return to you soon.”
