Mario Vargas Llosa talks about the change of title of his book by Isabel Preysler and about his relationship with Patricia Llosa

The relationship between Isabel Preysler and Mario Vargas Llosa came to an end in December 2022, closing an eight-year period together. Since then, each has spent the following months dealing with different issues, but the Nobel Prize in Literature had been lavished little in public. Only a few interviews granted in 2023 placed him in the spotlight today. A situation that has changed this Friday morning.

The Peruvian writer has reappeared in Madrid, within the framework of the event “A meeting for culture in freedom” of the Vargas Llosa Chair, promoted by the International Foundation for Freedom. It is the third annual edition of this event, which has allowed the author to meet with prominent figures in his field of work, culture and politics. Likewise, he has also ended up answering some personal questions.

One of the most questioned data in the statements has been the name change of his latest book. Originally presented as ¿Un champancito hermanito?, the Alfaguara publishing house will publish the new novel on October 26, which is now titled I dedicate my silence to you. For months the Nobel Prize winner had refused to explain why he modified it, and yet today he has not fully clarified whether it was because of his ex-partner, the one known as the “Queen of Hearts.”

“Indeed,” Vargas Llosa replied as to whether he had corrected the title, with reporters trying to ascertain whether he was referring to a change for Isabel Preysler. Beyond this response, the Peruvian novelist was very happy and excited about the new book, ensuring that the correction was very satisfactory. “I already corrected it and, for the first time in my career, I have not found any errors,” he said before journalists from different media and agencies.

Beyond the more professional issues, the Arequipa native arrived at the Madrid event in good company, along with his two children but without his ex-wife, Patricia Llosa. The two were married for 50 years, and currently maintain a cordial relationship, despite his absence this Friday. According to Vargas Llosa, Patricia was in New York, but she reiterated that everything was in good harmony after their reconciliation: “That's right, very united.”

For her part, Isabel Preysler has stayed away from any statement regarding the Nobel Prize in Literature. Currently, the socialite is involved in an audiovisual project for Disney Plus, this being the first time that she collaborates with a streaming platform in Spain. “Our protagonist opens the doors of her house to us to show us how she prepares for the most special time of the year,” indicates the official announcement.
