Last controversy in the American 'Big Brother': disciplinary expulsion for racism

If a few days ago an American reality show saw how one of its participants was literally taken out of the bed of an unconscious partner. On this occasion, Big Brother, the North American version of Big Brother, acted immediately and disciplinedly expelled a contestant after a racist insult.

"Zero tolerance in the house," CBS, the television channel that broadcasts the program in the country, stressed in a statement after hearing how Luke Valentine released a demeaning "nigger" (black) to a fellow editor. The controversy is served in a format that, in many parts of the world, has led to denounceable situations. One only has to remember what happened in our country with the Carlota Prado case.

It all happened when Luke Valentine and several colleagues were having a relaxed conversation inside Big Brother 25's house. At one point, the participant who was expelled uttered "we were in the damn room, 'nigger' [black]". Saying “nigger” in English to a black person is a very serious, derogatory and racist insult. And Luke had spilled it on Jared Fields.

At once, Luke started laughing and apologizing, but Jared snapped, “I don't give a shit. In situations that should be uncomfortable for a black man, white men feel more uncomfortable." It was then that Luke realized that the insult would bring him "trouble," and he wasn't wrong.

Shortly after, the American Big Brother organization decided to expel him for disciplinary reasons: “Luke violated Big Brother's code of conduct and there is zero tolerance in the house for using a racial slur. He has left the house”.

It is not the first time that the Big Brother format, anywhere in the world, has led a racist controversy. In the Portuguese edition, a contestant was expelled for Nazi insinuations in 2021, a year earlier, also in the American edition, another inhabitant was expelled for addressing a black colleague with the aforementioned “nigger” insult.

In Spain, the most striking case was when Los Chunguitos, the musical duo made up of José and Juan Salazar, called Coman "monkey", "gorilla" or "King Kong" after seeing him naked around the house at GH VIP 2015.

Here the organization of the Spanish reality only admonished the brothers. Their disciplinary expulsion came four days later when they made a homophobic comment: they would rather have a sick child "than a fagot."
