Like every Saturday, Fiesta, the program that occupies the weekend afternoon time slot, returned to the airwaves to review current issues in the world of gossip press. There were several topics that were discussed on the set of Emma García, among them, the controversy starring Ángel Cristo Jr and Bárbara Rey. Furthermore, taking advantage of the fact that this Saturday coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the program received Fayna Bethencourt, a victim of abuse by Carlos Navarro, 'El Yoyas'. On the show she has revealed that she knows where she is.
A little over three years ago, Carlos Navarro, also known as 'El Yoyas', was sentenced by the Criminal Court Number 5 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to spend six years in prison for committing seven crimes, six of them against his ex-wife, Fayna Betheancourt, and their two children. The sentence speaks of "continuous mistreatment" against Fayna. At the time of his entry into prison, the convicted man did not appear, so a search and arrest warrant was issued that still lasts today.
It has been a year since 'El Yoyas' is on the run from justice. That is why Fayna has sat down on the set to tell how she is feeling. "I'm fine, persistent," the woman began by saying. "At the time they told me that it would take a couple of months to find him and a year has already passed," she expressed, visibly disappointed. "This whole story is like a page that I haven't finished turning, it's there pending and hasn't been resolved. I haven't completely moved forward," she expressed.
During her intervention in the program, the woman confessed to having an idea of where the father of her two children could be, with whom she had a relationship for sixteen years and who ended up being her abuser. "I have an idea where it could be, yes. You don't stay hidden for a year if you are not protected and there are no people around you who make it easy for you," expressed Bethancourt, who, at the same time, assured that he did not want to give details so as to "not make it easier for him to remain hidden."
Every day that passes is another day of agony for Fayna, who knows that her attacker is still free from justice. "Today I am aware that this person is hidden and it is likely that he will approach me in a short space of time, but what scares me is that it is continuing over time," she expressed. "The more time passes, the more comfortable he will feel, and there will come a time when he can even prescribe that sentence. Then, he will be able to show up at my house as a free man, and I don't think it will be to say anything nice to me," she confessed.
The woman assures that the fact that, in recent months, several media outlets have contacted the convicted man to offer statements to the press, has not done her any good. "It is a surreal situation, that being convicted, he is allowed to speak to the media and claim his innocence... here the law has spoken, and he is guilty. There is a conviction. They give him that freedom to continue beating me psychologically," she said.
Now, Fayna feels strong enough to face this situation, since it is not easy at all. Furthermore, she assures that she is a visible face, but that there are many women who suffer from this fear. "There are convicted abusers who are out there without being caught, these women live in fear... they live in the same town, the same city, and no one catches these criminals," she said.
