Volkswagen confirms its first gigafactory outside Europe in Canada

The multinational Volkswagen confirmed yesterday the installation of its first gigafactory outside of Europe in Canada. Although the group announced the start-up of the plant last December, it was definitively made official yesterday. The detail of the operation comes just before the annual meeting that the company holds in Berlin to announce last year's results.

The one in Canada will be the third major Volkswagen factory in the world after Salzgitter, in Germany, and Sagunt, in Valencia. The construction of the Spanish plant will start this Friday with the protocol act of laying the first stone.

In Canada, the gigafactory will be located in Ontario. It is a decision that is part of its growth strategy in North America, the firm reported in a statement. Last week the possibility emerged that Volkswagen would prioritize the installation of a battery plant in the United States instead of in Eastern Europe thanks to the aid offered by the Government of President Joe Biden within the framework of his law to fight inflation. .

Volkswagen will develop the Canadian project through PowerCo, its battery subsidiary. This company is also the one in charge of the factory that the company will install in Sagunt, in which they plan to invest 3,000 million euros. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume stressed that the company's plans in North America are a "priority" within the framework of its strategic project.
