The Ferrari that seeks to be the most expensive auctioned car in the history of the brand

In the automotive world, one could speak of two parallel markets that advance at very different rates and, above all, at very different prices. On the one hand, in the conventional market for new vehicles, the brands are the ones that lead the way and those that establish, obviously, the outlay that drivers who fall in love with one or another car must pay.

But on the other hand is the world of auctions, where the value of certain cars can reach stratospheric levels if they are highly sought-after, appreciated models and, generally, manufactured in series of very few units. All this, together with what some buyers are willing to pay, can lead some specimens to exceed really high limits.

One of these examples is found in a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO unit that aims to become the highest-priced Italian brand car ever auctioned in a private sale. During the event, which will take place on November 13 by the specialists at RM Sotheby's, offers will be heard that are expected to be extremely high.

It should be noted that it is unusual for a copy of this racing car to end up on the open market, and that is one of the reasons why the auction house believes that it can set a new record for the Prancing Horse brand. Apart from this, there are very few cars that combine the style and dynamism that emanate from the 250 GTO, which was manufactured between 1962 and 1964.

The vehicle is powered by a powerful 3.0-liter Colombo V12 engine that helped it win the FIA GT International Manufacturers Championship for three consecutive years (1962 to 1964). If we add to this the fact that only 36 examples were produced, it is not surprising that this racing car has so many suitors.

The car, which has won numerous awards at different classic shows over the decades, is in excellent condition. It was initially sold for about 5,600 euros (at the exchange rate at the time) in 1964, although its current owner paid close to half a million euros (also at the exchange rate) in 1985.

It should be remembered that the last time a copy of this model was sold publicly, in 2018, the brand's record was broken with a figure that exceeded 45 million euros. The auction house believes that this specimen can greatly exceed that number. In fact, RM Sotheby's is initially asking for 60 million euros (more than 56 million euros at the current exchange rate).

If this figure were to be finalized, this 250 GTO would become the most expensive Ferrari ever sold at a private auction. If you are interested in vibrating with one of these exclusive units in motion, just take a look at the electrifying video that accompanies this article.
