The DGT changes the system to know the balance of card points: this is how you should consult it now

One of the most essential services provided by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is the consultation of the balance of points on the driving license. Credits are a critical resource for drivers as they determine your ability to maintain your license and your history. The maximum balance of points that a driver can accumulate is 15 and they are deducted as traffic violations are committed that lead to the loss of credits.

Since last October 1, the DGT has changed the system to access the points balance consultation. Since this month, users do not have the possibility of carrying out the procedure online, through username and password access, as was usual. Traffic has been replaced by telephone service.

To contact the DGT by phone you must call 060 and answer some contrast questions (name and surname, ID number, etc.) to identify yourself. Once this process has been completed, users can access the information and finally know the balance of points. Automatic service hours are 24 hours a day, and an agent is available from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

When the online point consultation system is replaced by a telephone one for cybersecurity reasons, users have three options to know the credit balance of their card.

To carry out the procedure, in addition to calling 060, you can also connect with the electronic Traffic headquarters through the internet using the Cl@ve system, or using the miDGT mobile application. In the latter case, the mobile device from which the query is made must be registered at the Traffic electronic headquarters.

The DGT reminds that it is not possible to consult points in person, but only through the channels enabled for this purpose. However, if the user needs an official points certificate for a third party, they can obtain it online through the Cl@ve system or go to any Traffic Headquarters or Office by appointment.

Likewise, to check the balance of points, the interested party's driving license must be valid. The information provided by the DGT details the history of recovery and loss of points, detailing the date and the points penalized or earned. The possible types of infractions incurred or the awareness courses carried out are also reflected.

The points license was implemented in Spain in 2006 with the aim of improving road safety and promoting more responsible driving. The DGT highlights on its website that this instrument "has managed to make driving seen not as an unlimited right, but as a credit that society grants to the driver and that can be lost as a result of repeatedly infringing behavior."

The entry into force of the points license coincides with the decrease in accidents on the roads. While in 2006 3,367 people died in accidents that occurred on interurban roads, this figure was reduced to 1,145 in 2022.
