Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo shared a reassuring video today after he was hospitalized the day before after suffering a fall while riding a bicycle that caused him to lose consciousness.
"Thank you for your messages. I'm home. Fortunately, I was wearing a helmet and my son called the emergency services. I thank the emergency services of the Gent University Hospital. Thank you for the care tonight. Sport is good, but at Sometimes you have to be prudent," De Croo said in a short video posted on social media.
The accident occurred on Saturday a few hundred meters from his home in Brakel (East Flanders) when the politician was riding a bike with his son, his cabinet reported to the Belgian agency on Saturday.
The liberal politician fell on his head and lost consciousness for a few moments, which is why he was taken to the hospital to undergo a series of tests, which did not reveal anything worrisome.
"It will not have any serious consequences (...). Fortunately, he was wearing his helmet. If not, the situation would have been much more serious," his father, the former politician Hernan De Croo, told the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.
Today's fall is not expected to affect his work schedule for next week, which will start on Monday with an appearance before the federal Parliament.
Alexander De Croo is a great fan of sports, and especially cycling. Recently, he has participated in a cycling tour and has also attended events celebrating World Bicycle Day.
