It's official. After months of rumors, Porsche has confirmed that the Cayenne will become a 100% electric car. This has been revealed by Oliver Blume, executive director of Porsche AG (and the Volkswagen Group), during the annual press conference of the German firm. Beyond the outstanding economic results presented, the conference has served to announce various important developments that affect the future of the manufacturer.
Despite the fact that the manufacturer of sports vehicles is investing a lot of resources in the development of synthetic fuels that prevent the disappearance of combustion engines after 2035, as Germany defends, it is not forgetting electric mobility. In view of the success of the Taycan, Porsche's first fully electric model, the firm is now going a step further and expanding its commitment to this market.
In fact, the Taycan, which registered close to 35,000 registrations in 2022, is the only electric vehicle currently offered by Porsche. However, this is expected to change in 2024, the year in which the new 100% electric Macan should reach the hands of the first customers.
And there are still more models that are involved in the electrification strategy. The 718 will also leave behind its thermal engine to be a battery electric in 2025. And, then, it will be the turn of the new generation -the fourth- of the Cayenne, which from the second half of this decade will only be available in its fully electric version. All in all, Porsche hopes that its future plans will lead to more than 80% of the cars it sells in 2030 being electric.
However, before this happens, the Cayenne will be the subject of "one of the most extensive updates in the history of Porsche" in this same 2023, the brand points out in a statement. The third generation of the emblematic Porsche SUV, which in 2022 has signed more than 95,000 sales, will be renewed to offer, among other things, plug-in hybrid versions with greater autonomy.
In addition, Porsche has announced the arrival of a new car. The executive director of the firm has revealed that it will be another 100% electric SUV. It will have sporty features and will be large, even larger than the Cayenne, making it the most voluminous model in the range. With this, Porsche's intention is to strengthen its position in the competitive segment of luxury SUVs, which has grown remarkably in markets such as China and the United States.
The interior of the new car will be new and very different from its current models, depending on the brand. Likewise, Porsche assures that its new vehicle concept "will be designed to offer powerful performance and automated driving functions", although it has not yet named it or proposed a date for the start of its commercialization.
Beyond revealing that the new SUV will have the typical Porsche roof line (Flyline), Oliver Blume has hardly specified any technical details about the new model. The only thing he has revealed is that he will use the SSP Sport platform developed by Porsche, the same on which the new generation of the Taycan will be manufactured.
