The NFL's Las Vegas Raiders has hired the first Black female team president.
Sandra Douglass Morgan is a Las Vegas native who is no stranger to firsts. The team announced Thursday that she was the first Black Nevada attorney when she worked for the City of North Las Vegas. She also was the first person of color to be elected chair of the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
Her independent directorships include Allegiant Airlines and Caesars Entertainment, as well as Fidelity National Fin Inc.
Morgan stated, "It's the honor of my life to be a Raider at one of the most important times in the team’s history." "This team's arrival has brought a new energy to the table and opened up opportunities that we could not have imagined." I look forward to bringing the team's integrity and spirit to every aspect of this organization.
Morgan graduated from Eldorado High School, the University of Nevada Reno, and the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
Mark Davis, team owner, stated that the Las Vegas connection was not an arbitrary criteria. However, it was something that helped to make the team more positive. "Obviously, someone who knows this community, knows its people, I believe it is important that we continue to build our foundation in Las Vegas.
Morgan's hire comes less than one year after Jon Gruden was fired as the head coach. A league investigation into Washington Football Team found emails Gruden had sent years before that revealed he had used homophobic, misogynistic and racist slurs.
Davis stated that the search for a president took about ten months.
Morgan stated that while Morgan has had many firsts in her career, she doesn't want to be the last.
She stated, "I want to reach a point where there are no more firsts." "If I can be an inspiration, help or open doors for any woman or girl out there, that would be an amazing accomplishment for me."
