Something that, in turn, is always linked to legality, since the Traffic Regulations of the General Directorate of Traffic are structured based on regulations that aim to protect the well-being of all road users. And all kinds of issues are specified in this, such as how to take children on bicycles safely and without the risk of fines.
One of the most popular ways to take a child on a bicycle is to install an approved bike seat. However, there are several key points to take into account in Spanish regulations. The first of them is to emphasize the fact that it must be approved for it to be legal, it does not matter if it is a front or rear one. And, furthermore, this is only valid for children up to seven years old and always only transporting one, not two. This regulation involves some changes compared to other countries, which can lead to confusion, especially in relation to another method: bicycle trailers for children.
Bicycle trailers for carrying children can be very versatile and practical, so it is not surprising that they are popular in some European countries. However, what is the case of Spain? Since the first thing that must always prevail is what the Traffic Regulations dictate. In this case, the DGT regulations are categorical, as they specify that circulation carrying children in a bicycle trailer on interurban roads is prohibited.
Therefore, no, it is not legal and this is stated in article 12.4 of the regulations, which specifies the conditions for bicycles to be able to tow trailers or semi-trailers. And one of them is “that in no case do they transport people in the towed vehicle.”
However, a point should be made here, because this is the case of interurban roads. But, when it comes to urban roads, the situation is different. This is because it is the municipal ordinances of each city that determine whether or not it is legal to travel through its urban roads carrying children in a bicycle trailer.
