How to wash cycling clothes?

In current cycling, there are several open debates. There are about components, about new disciplines and about professional cycling. In the background, there are also many doubts when it comes to washing our cycling clothes; while some recommend something, others affirm the opposite.

Today, from the hand of Etxeondo, a benchmark in the cycling textile sector, we bring you 5 basic tips for washing bike clothing.

Good raw materials, as well as meticulous manufacturing processes, mean an extension of the useful life of the pieces of clothing. Obviously, there are many other factors that influence this area, such as the frequency of use, humidity and temperature, but the quality of the fabrics is the basis of everything.

There is a widespread thought that washing chamois and jerseys continuously can shorten their life. Far from this belief, the truth is that garments should be cleaned as quickly as possible after wearing them, to prevent the acidity of sweat from damaging the fibers of the fabrics.

In the same sense, Etxeondo also does not recommend wearing the same garment for two consecutive days without having washed it. For example, in the case of culottes, one of the most important pieces of cycling clothing, small infections can be generated in the perineal area.

To reduce friction inside the washing machine, and to avoid potential snags, it is important to use laundry bags. It is also appropriate to turn the clothes inside out and close the zippers. In the case of culottes, they should always be washed inside out, with the pad facing out. Everything adds up when it comes to taking care of our cycling clothing.

Once inside the washing machine, we must use liquid soap and avoid fabric softener. Short programs, and with water temperatures below 30 degrees, are ideal for this type of sports clothing.

Finally, it is not recommended to use the dryer, except with "waterproof" garments, since in this way their water-repellent membranes are reactivated.

Clothes should not be hung in the sun either, excess heat can damage the fibers and dry them out, as well as wear out the most striking colors.

Following these 5 tips will help preserve cycling clothing. In any case, they are general indications. If on some occasion they cannot be fulfilled, as long as it is punctual, it will not be an inconvenience.
