Zelensky receives Von der Leyen at the Kyiv train station

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, arrived today by train at the railway station of the Ukrainian capital, where she was received by the country's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, in the first act of her sixth official visit to Ukraine since the beginning of the war.

The two leaders paid tribute at the station to the employees of the Ukrainian public railway company Ukrzaliznytsia, whose work has kept trains running in practically the entire territory under Kiev's control despite constant Russian attacks.

Von der Leyen wants to convey to the Ukrainian leaders that the institution she presides will support Ukraine “for as long as necessary.”

“Of course, the issue of expansion will top the agenda,” explained the senior official. European “financial aid, military support” and “the issue of the twelfth package of sanctions” against Russia will be other priorities of the visit.
