Zelensky celebrates Ukraine's Independence Day:

Ukrainians celebrate today the 31st anniversary of their independence, but this day also marks six months since Russia invaded Ukraine. "On February 24 they told us: You have no chance. But on August 24 we say: Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!", declared the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, in a video that he has released to commemorate this event. .

During the time that the war has lasted, Ukraine "has changed the world, history and our country," the leader assured on Wednesday.

In the video, which was broadcast by local media, the president also referred to the invasion that the country is suffering, six months after today. "Six months ago, Russia declared war on us. On February 24, the whole of Ukraine heard explosions and shots," the Ukrainian president said.

"On February 24 they told us: You have no chance. But on August 24 we say: Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!" Zelensky added.

For the politician, in these "six months we have changed history, the world and we have changed ourselves. Now we know for sure who really is our brother and friend, and who is not even an acquaintance."

At the same time, he said, "the whole world has found out who the Ukrainians are... No one else will say about Ukraine: it is somewhere, close to Russia."

"We didn't have HIMARS (high-capacity rocket systems) yet, but there were people who were ready to stop tanks with their bare hands. They weren't ready to close the sky (with an air shield), but we had people who were ready to close (defend) their homeland for themselves," he added.

In addition, in his opinion, Ukraine has managed to revitalize "the entire continent. Europe goes to the squares. Europe introduces harsh sanctions. Europe unanimously recognizes that Ukraine is a future member of the European Union."
