When a plane gets lost in the fog

The coastal fog was spectacular this morning in Gavà, Baix Llobregat, as can be seen in this photograph in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia with the plane crossing it.

Fog is a meteorological phenomenon, which consists of the suspension of very small droplets of water in the atmosphere or of humid hygroscopic particles, which reduce horizontal visibility at a distance of one kilometer or more. If there is a vision of 1 km or less it is considered as fog.

Today, commercial aircraft fly with sophisticated navigation systems, with sensors that allow receiving signals from radio aids, GPS and other devices, which are connected to each other to detect anomalies.

In addition, the work carried out by air traffic controllers and systems that prevent collisions with other aircraft or against the terrain is very important.

Although the human factor is always decisive, instrument flight is insurance for passengers today. For this reason, when we see images like this plane in the fog, we cannot stop thinking about the technological advances that have led to the conquest of the skies.
