Jonas Vingegaard got back on the bike this Tuesday, a month after suffering a serious accident in Itzulia that caused him several injuries. The Dane has already set his goal of arriving in the “best shape” for the Tour de France, which will begin on June 29 in the Italian city of Florence.

The one from Hillerslev, current champion of the French round, a race that he has been ruling for the last two editions, fractured his collarbone and several ribs, which left him with a collapsed lung, in the fourth stage of the Basque race held on April 4. In the accident, at the exit of a curve, important cyclists such as Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel also fell to the ground, but the Visma rider was the one who came out worst off.

“It’s the first time I get on the bike on the road. “I’m really happy to finally be able to pedal normally again,” the Scandinavian, who was operated on and admitted to the ICU of the University Hospital of Álava, where he spent a total of 12 days, explained in images released by his team.

Vingegaard assured that he feels “good”, “improving day by day”, although clarifying that he still has time to completely heal his injuries: “I still have to recover from some things, but it is getting better and better.” In any case, the Dane is already facing the final part of his rehabilitation with his sights set on the Grande Boucle.

“Of course, I hope to be at the start of the Tour de France. We don’t know what my physical shape will be like and how my recovery will go, but I will do everything I can to arrive in my best shape,” concluded Vingegaard, a great protagonist in recent years of the Tour along with the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, who is shaping up to be a once again as its great rival in Gallic lands.
