Villarreal-Real Madrid, the highlight of the Copa de la Reina quarterfinal draw

The draw for the quarterfinals of the Copa de la Reina that was held this morning in Las Rozas has been marked by the great absence of Barça, current champion of the tournament, and Sevilla. Both teams have been separated from the competition due to improper alignment of two of their players.

Without the presence of these two clubs in the hype, the teams that are still alive in the fight for the title already know who their next rivals will be. As in the Copa del Rey draw, Osasuna and Athletic Club will face each other, but this time in a single match in Pamplona.

There was also the possibility of a possible Madrid derby, but in the end it has not happened. Real Madrid will face Villarreal away from home, while Atlético de Madrid will play against Granada in the Andalusian city. The last pairing is made up of Alhama El Pozo and UDG Tenerife. This duel will be held in Murcia.

Barça, winner of the last three editions of the Copa de la Reina, has been eliminated from the competition due to the improper alignment of Geyse Ferreira. The player received a double yellow card the previous season when she was still a member of Madrid CFF, so she could not have played the game against Osasuna, in which her team thrashed 0-9 with a goal from the Brazilian included.

The RFEF Appeals Committee has dismissed the appeal filed by the Blaugrana club, which will not be eligible to win the title for the fourth consecutive time.

Another of the big surprises has been the absence of two greats such as Levante and Real Sociedad, who could not overcome their respective matches against Alhama El Pozo and Atlético de Madrid. The granotas fell a resounding 5-3 in Murcia, while the Basques lost at home against the colchoneras, candidates to win the title with Real Madrid.

The teams that do continue in the competition will play their quarterfinal matches in a single match on March 7, 8 or 9, dates that are yet to be confirmed.
