On some occasions, a worker may suffer some type of ailment, illness or accident that forces him to have to request work disability, which can be temporary or permanent. There are various types of disabilities, and each of them is compensated with some type of pension granted by the State due to the physical or psychological impediment that does not allow a worker to continue performing the functions of his job.

To calculate these compensations, the main variables to take into account are the degree of disability that the person has, the jobs that they can no longer occupy and the circumstances in which the disability was acquired.

The first step in determining benefit is whether a person's disability is temporary or permanent. The first case is the most common when medical leave is given. This may be due to some type of injury, specific illness or other assumptions. It is the most frequent when, for example, a worker breaks a bone due to a fall or is going through a flu that prevents him from doing his job for a few days.

In any case, to be temporary, the disability or sick leave must last less than twelve months, although there is an extension of six more months depending on the type of sick leave. For example, if it is sick leave due to a knee operation, the employee does not recover well and must undergo another operation or continue with treatment, the aforementioned extension would be granted.

For this type of disability, the contract is suspended and the worker is entitled to a pension or subsidy that would correspond to 60% or 75% of the regulatory base in professional contingencies. For a common illness and non-occupational accident, 60% of the regulatory base of your salary would correspond to you from the fourth day of sick leave to the twentieth inclusive and 75% from the 21st day onwards. In the event of professional illness or accident at work, then the percentage is 75% of the regulatory base from the day following the sick leave.

In the case of permanent incapacity for work, it is possible that the person affected, in addition to receiving a pension, is also working and therefore has two sources of income. This is financial compensation for not being able to access certain jobs due to disability. We can distinguish three degrees of permanent work disabilities.

The first degree is partial permanent disability (PPI). In this case, a medical team, after a long study, must determine that the person has a disability greater than 33%, but that they can carry out the fundamental tasks of their profession. In this case, the subsidy is made through a single payment of 24 monthly payments in one go. As for the amount, it depends on the regulatory base, since someone with a regulatory base of 2,000 euros is not the same as 1,000. For example, an employee who has an IPP and his regulatory base is 1,800 euros will receive compensation in a single payment of 43,200 euros (1,800 x 24) in a single time. That is, it is not a monthly benefit.

The second degree is that of Total Permanent Disability (IPT). This case occurs when the employee cannot continue to carry out their work in their usual profession and must seek a new occupation. For example, a worker who develops a physical job and who suffers a knee injury that prevents him from moving, should change his profession. In this case, the affected person would receive a pension for life that is compatible with the salary of his new job. The pension would be 55% of the regulatory base. Thus, for someone whose base is 1,500 euros, the benefit would be 825 euros permanently and compatible with another job.

Finally, there is the degree of Absolute Permanent Disability (IPA), here the person suffers a serious injury or illness and cannot carry out practically any profession. It should be noted that this pension may be compatible with certain very specific jobs. For example, a blind person with an IPA degree granted could work in the sale of lottery coupons in an adapted way and receive this salary and his pension simultaneously.
