Tom Cruise wants to become the first actor to shoot in space

Top Gun star Tom Cruise plans to travel to the International Space Station to become the first actor to shoot movie scenes outside of Earth. The actor, known for being a lover of risk scenes, broadens his ambition with this new film project.

The president of the Universal production company, Donna Langley, explained on the British BBC that they are developing "a great project with Tom in which it is contemplated that he does just that, go on a rocket to the space station and shoot there." She has also added that she hopes Cruise will become the first civilian to spacewalk outside the station.

It was the same actor who had the idea and is working on it together with director Doug Liman, with whom he has already coincided in films such as Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and American Made (2017).

The idea came up during the pandemic and the approach to the film is already underway. "Most of the story takes place on Earth, but at a certain point the character needs to go out into space to fix things," Langley detailed.

This initiative, as highlighted by the directive, aims to overcome the challenges facing the film industry to continue attracting the public to theaters. That is why he assured that "great visual effects" will not be enough to generate a great success.

Langley stated that the "bar is getting higher and higher" for viewers to decide to go see a film at the cinema. Watching movies from home is more 'comfortable' and increasingly common among consumers. For them to return to theaters, the content must be truly worthy of the big screen.
