To combat sexist violence: “Ask, speak, listen”

In recent years, studies on the impact of sexist violence have provided data that defines a structural problem in our society. These data, like those collected by the Survey on sexist violence in Catalonia (2021), make visible and objective a global reality with an intergenerational scope:

In Barcelona we also know the context of sexual violence, the most prevalent, thanks to the care work of the city's two reference hospitals, which have specialized units to assist anyone who has suffered a sexual assault:

Behind each of these figures there is a story. A story that can be close or experienced in the first person. Listen, ask and talk about sexist violence, in all its forms. Behaviors that are abusive, harassment at work, physical and sexual violence, intimidation, insults. Events that happen at home or on the street, with partners or ex-partners, family members, co-workers or strangers. Together, let's create safe spaces where speaking is the first step to combat violence against women.

A structural problem requires a forceful response from public administrations. In Barcelona we have teams specialized in caring for women and minors who experience a situation of sexist violence, deployed both in specific services, such as the Care, Recovery and Reception Service (SARA) or the information and care points for women. (PIAM), as in the victim care service (SAV) of the Barcelona Urban Police or the hospital teams of the Hospital Clínic and the Hospital de la Vall d'Hebron.
