The story of a vegan passenger on a flight from a Dutch company has gone around the world. Juanita Headley, a lawyer and writer, was traveling from Ghana to Amsterdam to give a conference. The woman asked for a menu adapted to her diet, but the food that was brought caused her outrage: “In these times when veganism is not a new phenomenon, it is unacceptable that a six-hour flight does not carry menus for situations like this “.

It all happened on April 19. The passenger told Insider that she has followed a vegan diet for 13 years, as she is allergic to some products of animal origin, such as eggs. In addition, the woman maintains that she usually brings her own food, but on this occasion she did not have time because she had changed her flight and company.

Headley was transferred to the flight at short notice, after the original, bound for London, was delayed. The lack of time to buy her own food pushed her to order her menu at the KLM company. When she informed the staff of her request, she was initially told that they were not sure it was possible, but hours before she was due to fly she was assured that a vegan menu would be available on the plane.

Already in full flight, the food that was served to him was not to his liking. “She was hungry, the rest of the passengers ate a hot dish, but first they brought me some nuts, seven pieces of tangerine and four pieces of pineapple,” laments the woman. That was her starter, for the second they served her a banana, accompanied by six other pieces of pineapple and some nuts.

“The staff gave me very attentive personal service and made me feel very good, but the impromptu food seemed like a joke,” he adds. According to the KLM company, the airline only guarantees vegan meals if the passenger submits a request at least 24 hours before the flight’s departure. But the woman assures that she received confirmation from the staff.

“In these days when veganism is not a new phenomenon, it is unacceptable that a six-hour flight does not carry a few extra meals for situations like this. Or, at the very least, that vegetarian food is also vegan, which would simplify the things for the crew and passengers,” Headley says.

A KLM representative told Insider that due to the unforeseen situation, vegan food was not available during the flight. “We are sorry this has happened and we would like to offer our sincere apologies,” he said. But the woman was not satisfied with the apology, and she demanded that the companies improve their service.

It is not the first time that vegan passengers have encountered situations like this on planes. Last summer, an Air Canada passenger also reported that she was served a bottle of water as a vegan meal during the trip, despite having ordered a special menu in advance.
