The remains of a plane that crashed 54 years ago in the Swiss Alps have been discovered in the Aletsch glacier, the largest in Western Europe, whose progressive melting could favor new findings of this type in the future, local media reported today. Swiss country.
The plane, a Piper Cherokee with registration HB-OYL, crashed on June 30, 1968 in the area with three people on board: a teacher, a doctor and his son, all from Zurich.
The corpses were recovered at that time, although the damaged device was not searched for or could not be recovered because the rescue techniques were not advanced enough at the time to operate on Aletsch, a glacier that rises 4,000 meters high in the famous mountain massif of Jungfrau.
After half a century of oblivion, the remains were found by a mountain guide this Thursday, August 4, who notified the cantonal police of the discovery so that work to recover the device could begin shortly.
