They denounce police brutality against migrants due to an intervention in Lavapiés

The images of a police intervention in the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés have sparked controversy on social networks, given what could be a case of police brutality against migrants. The leader of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has also spoken out on the matter.

In the video you can see how two national police officers subdue two black men, who were apparently selling on the street. In the images, without clarifying the context, what is striking is the way in which they are used against these people, who do not use violence while the video lasts.

The Police Headquarters explained that the intervention took place this Saturday morning after a call alerted that four individuals were attacking each other. Upon arrival, the agents separated the two most upset men. However, both individuals have reacted in a hostile manner towards the police, causing an injury to an officer and damage to a police vehicle.

The same sources have detailed that when the two people were identified, one of them had drugs. Both have been arrested for the crime of attacking authority.

Beyond the official explanations, the activist Serigne Mbaye shared the images through her X account, with the following comment: "How long will this be?", to which she added a public complaint: "What is the justification for this such violent action? The harassment and police violence in Lavapiés has no name. I hope that the Ministry of the Interior, the police and the ombudsman take action before it is too late."

The general secretary of Unidas Podemos, Ione Belarra, has also taken a position on the matter: "This absolutely gratuitous and unjustified police violence that is repeated against racialized people cannot have a place in a democracy. The best thing for the FCSE would be to act on its own by removing to those who do not do their job well.

For his part, Sumar has announced that he will ask for explanations from the Interior at the Congress Table for the police intervention in Lavapiés. This was revealed by the party's spokesperson in the Lower House, Íñigo Errejón, on his social networks.

Errejón says that the video circulating on the Internet "records what appears to be an attack in the Lavapiés neighborhood, by two agents of the National Police against two young men, where cruelty can be perceived, which does not seem to respond to a restrained protocol." of police action". Furthermore, he stressed: "do not normalize this happening, do not look the other way, ask for explanations."

Given the events that occurred, Sumar asks the Interior to answer these questions: What justification does the Ministry of the Interior find for the agents to have applied disproportionate police action? How do you evaluate the events that occurred? How are you going to clarify the facts? Has a file been opened to the agents? What measures are you going to take in response to citizen complaints about the existence of police violence towards migrants in the Lavapiés neighborhood?
