The Mexican Rafael Caro Quintero, the most wanted fugitive by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA, in English) and for whom a reward of 20 million dollars was offered for information for his capture, was arrested this Friday in the municipality of San Simón , in the state of Sinaloa.

The arrest of Caro Quintero, 69, was due to the fact that the authorities had allegedly detected that he had returned to criminal activity on a minimal scale, according to official sources. He was found while hiding in the bushes thanks in part to the help of a specialized search and rescue dog.

Nicknamed "el narco de narcos" in the 1980s, as one of the most famous drug traffickers in Mexico, he is considered one of the founders of the Guadalajara cartel, one of the most famous Mexican drug trafficking groups.

In 1985, he was arrested and later accused of being behind the murder of a DEA agent. This assassination marked a before and after in relations between the US and Mexico. The United States will immediately request his extradition.

He was initially sentenced to 40 years in prison, but finally left the prison in 2013, as he was acquitted of crimes such as kidnapping, homicide and actions against health. However, in 2021 it was determined that Rafael Caro Quintero could be extradited to the United States and finally, and almost a decade after leaving prison, he has been detained again.
