The Virtus assaults the Palau and leaves coal to Barça

Three Kings night was not the best for Barça, surpassed at the Palau by a very serious Virtus. The Catalans surprisingly showed themselves to be a team without tension, losing up to 17 balls (three in the decisive 26 seconds) and committing nine fewer fouls than their rival. Very bad figures, embellished with a bad night in the triple (8/26), which drew a final defeat in a Euroleague that will be very long.

The duel did not start with the best omens for the Catalans, as if the Kings were eager to leave coal at the Palau. Virtus and Barça met for the first time in 21 years and the initial truce, with the beautiful recognition of Sergio Scariolo by the Barca fans, immediately took on stormy airs. The Italian team started scoring easily against a very unbalanced local defense and without high enough tension. Also, without Satoransky, who was out at the last minute, Laprovittola was not able to handle his team in attack. Almost at the end of the first quarter, Bako had the first high of the night (10-21, minute 8). On the wing, Sarunas Jasikevicius looked desperate at Scariolo's apparent calm a few yards to his left.

The beginning of the second set continued along the same lines, with sacks of coal piling up at the gates of the Palau. Again Bako, this time with two free throws, stretched to 15-28 (minute 12). Barça couldn't find an answer, with the work in Da Silva's area helping in the rebound again on a positive note. But suddenly, Abrines' three-pointers ignited a spark and Higgins capped off an 11-0 run to get his team back into contention (29-30). Barça went to the changing rooms without having commanded a second on the scoreboard but with the consolation of having disguised a bad first half with that set, which allowed them to jump into the third quarter with their chances of keeping the European lead intact.

Despite Lundberg's continuous attempts to avoid it, the Dane was sensational on the Barcelona night, Barça finally managed to sign their first lead after a three-pointer from Kalinic and two free throws from Vesely (53-51, minute 25). With the marking turned around, Jasikevicius's team was obliged to calm down if they wanted to get out of the Three Kings night with flying colours. Basically because Virtus is not a team that gives up easily, even though it is currently out of the playoff spots. In fact, the Italian response was immediate, regaining command in the blink of an eye, Lundberg through, of course.

The Barça team did not start well in the last quarter either, although they reacted and managed to make it 70-73. But then it crashed. A triple from Teodosic and three incomprehensible losses in 26 seconds condemned him to receive a good dose of coal.
