The University of Murcia (UMU) will award its Medal of Honor to veteran cyclist Alejandro Valverde for his values and spirit and this has been approved by the educational institution after being proposed to the university faculty by the Faculty of Sports Sciences.

This 2022 'El Bala' has decided to hang up the bicycle as a professional at 42 years old after having achieved 133 victories, including the world champion title in 2018 and the general of the Vuelta a España in 2009.

After an enviable career, all that remains is for him to enjoy, although he is still linked to the world of cycling with the team where he played for most of his career, the Movistar Team, where he has already been seen training with his former teammates.

To accompany a legend like Valverde will be another Murcian who is on his way to becoming one of them, the tennis player Carlos Alcaraz. From the UMU they value that both "incarnate remarkable human values in line with the qualities inherent to the university spirit, among which respect, the capacity for sacrifice, perseverance and the spirit of improvement stand out" and they are proud to be able to give them this recognition.
