The United Kingdom captures the former military man accused of terrorism who escaped from prison

The 21-year-old fugitive ex-military man, who was awaiting trial for crimes linked to terrorism and who escaped from prison on Wednesday, was recaptured this Saturday after a major search and capture operation that has put the entire United Kingdom on alert.

The British Daniel Abed Khalife, a former member of the British Army, fled in the undercarriage of a delivery van from the kitchen of Wandsworth prison, in west London, where he was working as a cook.

The escape has caused the country's airports and ports to intensify passport controls on passengers, as authorities believe that the escapee could intend to leave the country.

These additional controls have caused delays and long lines at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports, as well as at Manchester and the port of Dover.

Although the police assure that Khalife represents a "low risk" for the population, they have asked any citizen who can see him not to approach him and call the security forces immediately.

According to the Sky News channel, the young man was formally charged on January 27 following an investigation by the anti-terrorist unit of the Metropolitan Police. Among other charges, he is accused of having obtained information about members of the Armed Forces that could be used for terrorist purposes and of having placed objects that simulated bombs on a military base.

Another charge is that of having committed an "act detrimental to the security or interests of the State", in reference to the transmission of sensitive information to an individual.

He is scheduled to be tried on November 20 at Woolwich Court.
